Transcatheter
mitral valve replacement (TMVR) is a minimally
invasive procedure used to treat mitral valve regurgitation (MR). MR is a
condition in which the mitral valve does not close properly, allowing blood to
flow backward from the left ventricle to the left atrium. This can cause a
number of symptoms, including shortness of breath, fatigue, and chest pain.
TMVR
is performed by inserting a catheter through a small incision in the patient's
leg or groin. The catheter is then guided to the heart, where a new mitral
valve is delivered and implanted. The old valve is then either removed or left
in place.
TMVR
is a relatively new procedure, but it has been shown to be an effective
treatment for MR in patients who are not candidates for open-heart surgery. Dr.
Ravinder Singh Rao is a leading expert
in TMVR in India. He has performed hundreds of TMVR procedures with
excellent results.
How TMVR Works
The
mitral valve is located between the left atrium and the left ventricle. It has
two leaflets that open and close to allow blood to flow from the atrium to the
ventricle. In MR, the leaflets do not close properly, allowing blood to flow
backward from the ventricle to the atrium.
TMVR
involves the replacement of the mitral valve with an artificial valve. The
artificial valve is delivered through a catheter that is inserted into a blood
vessel in the patient's leg or groin. The catheter is then guided to the heart,
where the new valve is implanted. The old valve is then either removed or left
in place.
TMVR
offers a number of benefits over traditional open-heart surgery for the
treatment of MR. These benefits include:
·
Less
invasive: TMVR is a minimally
invasive procedure that does not require opening the chest. This results in a
shorter hospital stay, a faster recovery time, and a lower risk of
complications.
·
Safer
for high-risk patients: TMVR is a safe option for
patients who are not candidates for open-heart surgery due to age, health, or
other factors.
·
Effective: TMVR
has been shown to be an effective treatment for MR, with results similar to
those of open-heart surgery.
Recovery from TMVR
The
recovery time from TMVR is typically shorter than the recovery time from
open-heart surgery. Most patients are able to go home from the hospital within
a few days of the procedure. However, it may take several weeks or months for
patients to fully recover from TMVR.
